About the site
Flederland...What kind of a name is that? Well...for reasons I don't feel like sharing with you, my friends from my hometown of (Emmen, NL)have called me "Fledermaus" since I was 16 years old. The name for a website is merely a fusion of my nickname and my imaginary world.
Flederland is the world of my images, videos and music.
The very first version of Flederland was my portfolio, and it was also a website. I didn't feel like dragging all my photo's around, because some of them are pretty large, others were pretty small (I lost them constantly) and so I decided that it was easier to carry a CD-ROM around in a neat cover. Version 1 of Flederland was born in the fall of 2003 and didn't really evolve untill I bought a domain and webspace. It would have been a total waste of money to do nothing with it, but Flederland 1 was too large and slow because I hadn't really thought that it might actually be published on the net.
First I experimented with a Flash-based site, but it soon became apparent that I was a bit too megalomane to make a quick-loading site. I used clips that were rendered at 1200 x 1024, because I loved the effect. Sadly, however, the page would not load within two minutes.
I decided to use HTML rather than Flash because I didn't know anything from Flash. This way I could learn a little bit of Flash while maintaining the HTML site.
The Flash interface has become a landscape with the viewer inside it discovering. Mystery is very important, as is the search for new possibilities.
After putting the flash site online I discovered that it was not really useful as a website. As an art project it will be part of Flederland, but not as a means to publish.
There has been a testversion of Flederland which used a cms, but I decided that I would continue working on the site myself. It takes more work, but this way I can shape the site so that the art has the best place.
